Hair loss, thinning and spot alopecia
At Sergio Giannasso Hair & Make-up we receive a lot of inquiries from clients about hair loss or thinning.
Everybody typically loses up to 100 hairs a day, but occasionally healthy hair will thin dramatically or fall out in very localised areas of the scalp – a condition commonly referred to as “spot alopecia”. If you do experience any of the above – and many people do – FEAR NOT!
Hair usually grows back. It may take a few months or up to a year. The good point is that it almost always grows back and there is plenty you can do to ensure it grows back thick and healthy.
The actual shedding could simply be the result of pregnancy, childbirth, diet, certain medications we take, even plain old stress! Hair reacts by prematurely entering into the so-called telogen (resting) phase in its life cycle. What you can do is is kickstart it back to its natural cycle. That usually means getting enough sleep, eating well and taking healthy exercise. Vitamin D (actually a hormone!) also plays a crucial role in healthy hair so make sure you’re getting enough of that as well.
Steroid creams and steroid injections are options, but here at the salon we stock and recommend more gentle treatments with Arginine-based shampoos.
Stimuliste from Kerastase (RRP £42), for example, features some incredible ingredients for keeping hair healthy and dense. Senior Stylist Adam Bennett, our in-house Kerastase Ambassador, has this to say about it:
“The Stimuliste Spray from Kerastase works with Arginine, Gluco Lipids, Vitamin PP AND Aminexil which actually is a total dream combination in the fight against hair loss. Arginine makes sure your hair is getting all the nutrition it needs way down at the bulb of the hair. The Vitamin PP is a clever element that helps produce two enzymes – it helps keratin production and ensures the circulation at the root is working as it should. Gluco Lipids make sure the hair fibre is strong and healthy and the Aminexil reduces the build up and hardening of collagen in the skin, so hair grows through properly without being strangled (and, as a result, much finer).
Daily use of the spray, coupled with the Bain Stimuliste shampoo (RRP £16.50) is one sure way to prepare your scalp for when the hair grows back.”
For men who suffer so-called male pattern hair loss, there is another very effective prescription-only treatment on the market called propecia. This actively lowers the level of DHT, a hormone linked to hair thinning / loss. It does however only work with men and usually retails from £90 – £115 for a 90 day course.
