Now that the summer season is well and truly upon us, it’s time for a holiday! Although we have spent the entire year eagerly waiting for some summer sun, there are many elements to consider that could have you facing a bad hair day if you don’t prepare and protect your hair the right way. The change in climate, the chlorine and the sun can all have damaging effects; here are a few tips to help you look after your locks and maintain perfect summer holiday hair!
Before you leave
If you have split-ends it’s vital that you get them trimmed before going away, otherwise the mix of sun, chlorine and heat will make them much worse. Also, if you are planning to get balayage or have your highlights refreshed before your holiday, bear in mind that the sun will lighten them even further. Finally, treat your locks to a deep conditioning treatment once a week leading up to your holiday.
In order to protect your hair against the sunshine, sand, wind, sea water – buy a hat or head scarf to take with you. This will allow you to keep your hair covered, and it is the best way to protect your hair from basically everything that your holiday may throw at you!
You’ll need to invest in good quality products to protect your tresses while you’re away. (We recommend *Redken Curvaceous for preventing curls frizzing and *(Kérastase’s Chronologiste for restoring shine and bounce!) It’s also important to remember to rinse your hair with clean water every time you come out of the pool or sea – chlorine and sea water can really dry out your hair. For ultimate protection, apply a deep conditioning treatment to your hair and wrap in a head scarf.
In a hot climate you may want to grow your hair so it is long enough to wear up, in updos and buns as well as the classic ponytail. When you are on holiday, and especially in a hot humid place, it is best not to bother straightening your hair so it is dead straight as it will only frizz at the first sign of humidity. Instead, opt for braided styles or beach waves for a perfect holiday look.
When you get back
If you feel your hair is a little dry from your holiday then invest in a moisturising shampoo conditioner, such as *Kérastase’s Chronologiste, to get the condition back. Or even better continue with your weekly deep conditioning treatments to restore a loss of moisture.
